Abstract:
The author discusses identity as a dynamic interplay between
positivity (coherence, continuity) and negativity (disintegrating
tendencies, openness for change). Traditionally, identity is
dominated by positivity, whilst contingency is fended off. In
contrast, there are tendencies towards the affirmation of
contingency and negativity in late modern age. Thus, in late modern
age there is an immanent threat of the stability of the positivity
of identity. The threat can be fended off by strengthening the
positivity of identity in the direction of a fundamentalist
identity, e.g., by religious identifications, denying any
contingency. Adolescents from an insecure traditional background
may particularly be inclined to develop a fundamentalist identity
in this way. Collectives of people with fundamentalist identities
of the same type may secure and enhance their cohesiveness by the
use of media specifically addressed to the inherent logics of
fundamentalist identity.
